Intent

At Netherton CE Primary school, we are committed to providing equal opportunity to all pupils within Art and Design. We aim to fulfil the National Curriculum and provide a broad and balanced curriculum which ensures progressive development of artistic skills and techniques in a range of media and forms, including drawing, painting and sculpture.

Our vision is for children to believe ‘I can do it’ and that they will grow in confidence as well as developing their knowledge and skills. Art and Design at Netherton CE Primary is intended to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts as well as a means to promote and foster wellbeing and an ‘I can do it’ attitude through an expressive form. Children will have the opportunity to take part in activities that include a range of first hand visual, tactile and sensory experiences and will be able to communicate what they see, feel and think using both language and art forms.

Our vision is for children to know ‘I am accepted’ and ‘I am loved’, enabling them to communicate freely through Art and Design in a safe and loving environment. Art and Design will encourage the children to observe the world around them. It opens their eyes to the previously unobserved and inspires their appreciation of all that is observed. This will contribute to their wellbeing and cultural experiences and help them to ‘grow’.

Implementation

In order to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum and provide quality first teaching, a progressive scheme of work is delivered that covers the relevant milestones for each area of Art and Design. This builds on skills and techniques as the children move through the school. Art and Design is taught in the first half of each term. Therefore, each year group will undertake three units of art and design per year. Each unit of Art and Design provides opportunity to apply reading and writing skills as a means of gaining and sharing knowledge. Through each unit, the children are encouraged to use and apply our Christian vision and our school Christian values of respect, acceptance, positivity, perseverance, fairness and forgiveness.

The teaching of Art and Design includes study of carefully selected artists, craftspeople and designers and the demonstration and modelling of key skills and techniques. Children will be given opportunities to use their experiences and exploit cross-curricular links to develop ideas and inspiration, using and applying acquired skills and techniques to create artwork. Children will also be given the opportunity to develop their appreciation of the artwork of others, including their peers. They will analyse various art works using the language of Art and Design.

To aid children in their development of subject knowledge, each lesson has a ‘Golden Nugget’ of information. This may relate to an artist and their work, or knowledge required to be able to carry out a technique. To ensure that children are ‘knowing more and remembering more’, an ‘Exit Ticket’ is completed at the end of each lesson based on the ‘Golden Nugget’ and a ‘Final Exit Ticket’ is completed at the end of a unit of work.

The teaching of Art and Design is rigorously monitored by the subject leader through lesson observations, work scrutiny, staff feedback and pupil voice. The subject leader supports staff to ensure quality first teaching of Art and Design.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, children have developed their skills and techniques and can confidently talk about and analyse the work of significant artists, craftspeople and designers as well as their own work. Children are able to apply artistic skills and techniques, use the language of Art and Design and express and communicate their thinking and ideas. Children have experienced a range of media, materials and art forms, analysed art work and taken inspiration from the world around them, building upon their cultural knowledge and contributing to their wellbeing. As well as enhancing their wellbeing, this curriculum will help children to develop a love and enjoyment of Art and Design. Children can appreciate how much they have ‘grown’ in their artistic abilities.
