Intent

At Netherton C E Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is shaped by our school vision. This includes for children to believe ‘I can do it’. We aim for all learners to engage in the current topics that the curriculum includes, being involved in discussions and voicing their opinion. We want the children to have the relevant knowledge to keep them safe in today’s everchanging world. Our vision is for all children to believe ‘I can grow’. The curriculum provides opportunity for pupils to explore topics that they may encounter in their lives, and for reflection and development both as individuals and as an understanding, accepting and loving school community. Therefore, our vision also includes for all children to believe ‘I am accepted’ and ‘I am loved’. With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values, Perseverance, Fairness, Respect, Forgiveness, Acceptance and Positivity.

 

Implementation 

PSHE is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum, and it is delivered through the use of a scheme, ‘Jigsaw’. Our PSHE curriculum equips our children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. PSHE is taught across the school from Reception to Year 6 on a weekly basis. Our PSHE Curriculum includes the statutory guidance outlined in the Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) DfE guidance.

The Jigsaw scheme ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. We share songs, assemblies and have a whole school end of unit outcome which encourages a sense of belonging and unity across the school. 

Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;

  • Being Me in My World - Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters)
  • Celebrating Difference - Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work
  • Dreams and Goals - Includes goal setting, aspirations, working together to design and organise fund-raising events
  • Healthy Me - Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices
  • Relationships - Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills
  • Changing Me - Includes Sex and Relationship Education in the context of looking at change

The teachers and pupils assess their learning at the end of the lesson by completing an exit ticket to assess key knowledge.  At the end of the unit, pupils complete a final exit ticket to reflect on their knowledge and understanding. Our assessment systems enable teachers to make informed judgements about the depth of their learning and the progress they have made over time.

The teaching of PSHE is monitored by the PSHE subject leaders. This overview allows for rigorous monitoring through lesson observations, work scrutiny, staff feedback and pupil voice by both the subject leader and other senior staff within the school which helps to ensure quality first teaching of the subject. 

Impact

Children demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty. They demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school, and this is evident in the good behaviour seen across the school. By the time children leave our school, they are becoming healthy and responsible members of society and are well on their journey, preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
