Intent
At Netherton CE Primary School, we are committed to providing equal opportunity to all pupils within Music. We aim to fulfil the National Curriculum and provide a broad and balanced curriculum which ensures progressive development of musical skills and techniques in a range of media and forms. Music teaching at Netherton CE Primary will develop an appreciation and enjoyment of the arts, as well as a means to promote and foster wellbeing through an expressive form. Music encourages the children to observe the world around them and it exposes them to experiences and feelings that may be new to them. This contributes to their wellbeing and cultural capital.
Implementation
We deliver a progressive scheme of work based on the National Curriculum which covers the relevant skills for each area of Music. Skills and techniques are built on as the children move through the school. Through the gradual structure of the planning, within and across year groups, learners are actively encouraged to consider key questions and continuously make connections. Vocabulary is key to learning in Music. Appropriate and progressive technical vocabulary is taught and revisited alongside these key concepts. Music is taught weekly throughout the year, in alternate half terms. Therefore, each year group will undertake three units of music per year. Each unit of Music provides opportunity to apply literacy skills as a means of gaining and sharing knowledge. Additionally, in years 5 and 6, children have whole class instrumental lessons delivered by specialist teachers from Dudley Performing Arts. Through each unit, the children are encouraged to use and apply our Christian vision and our school Christian values of respect, acceptance, positivity, perseverance, caring, fairness and forgiveness.
Children will have the opportunity to take part in activities that include listening, evaluating, recording, composing and performing music. Children will use their experiences and cross-curricular links to develop ideas and inspiration, using and applying acquired skills and musical knowledge to create original compositions. Children will also develop knowledge of significant composers and musical genres and will be given the opportunity to develop their appreciation for the music of others, including their peers. The teaching of Music is monitored by the subject leader through lesson observations, work scrutiny, staff feedback and pupil voice. The subject leader supports staff to ensure quality first teaching of Music.
Impact
Pupils and their teachers assess their learning at the end of each lesson by completing an exit ticket to assess their knowledge whilst also considering their development of skill. Each unit will culminate in a performance and pupils will complete a final exit ticket, demonstrating their knowledge and understanding, as well as being encouraged to talk about their learning. By the end of Year 6, children will have progressively developed their skills and will confidently talk about and analyse their own work and that of significant composers. The children will have experienced a range of musical genres and instruments and taken inspiration from the world around them. We believe that the children will have developed an enjoyment of Music which they will carry with them into adult life.
